BrainJam

I've always dreamed of having a direct connection from my brain, directly to my synthesisers.
With Project BrainJam, I'm getting close. Although the day I put my headset on, and a symphony comes out of the speakers, is very far away, I am closer today to realising my “Look ma, no hands!” fantasy than ever before.

So, what are we doing here?
The headset I put on my head picks up EEG (Eletro EncephaloGraph) from my brain. This is transmitted via Bluetooth to my modular rig, where it is filtered, separated and converted into control voltages that represent five different frequencies of brainwaves:
  • Alpha waves (8-12 Hz) usually associated with relaxed, meditative states.
  • Beta waves (13-30 Hz) are linked with higher anxiety and more active states, with attention often directed externally
  • Gamma waves (30- Hz) are linked with states or tasks that require more focused concentration
  • Theta waves (4-8 Hz) are linked with deep relaxation and inward focus
  • Delta waves (0.3 - 4 Hz) are linked with deep sleep
These control voltages are then connected to various parts of my synth, and can control various aspects like pitch, timber and rhythm according to my brain activity. In the videos below you can see my various experiments with BrainJam!
